Peking University

Peking University is a comprehensive and national key university. Founded in 1898 and originally known as the Imperial University of Peking, it was the first national university covering comprehensive disciplines in China, and has been a leading institution of higher education in China since its establishment. PKU's traditional emphasis on patriotism, progress, democracy, and science, together with its educational standards of diligence, precision, factualism, and innovation, has been passed down from generation to generation. Its aim is to rank among the world's best universities in the future.

Home to about 43,327 undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, domestic and overseas students, Peking University consists of 64 schools and departments and proud of its outstanding faculty, including 74 members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), 13 members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), and 21 members of the Third World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). Thus Peking University has become a center for teaching and research and a university of a new type, embracing diverse branches of learning such as basic and applied sciences, social sciences and the humanities, and sciences of medicine, management, and education.

PKU has effectively combined research on important scientific subjects with the training of personnel with a high level of specialized knowledge and professional skill as demanded by the country's socialist modernization. PKU strives not only for improvements in teaching and research work, but also for the promotion of interaction and mutual promotion among various disciplines.

The Library at Peking University

Peking University Library, founded in 1898, is a comprehensive, open-type research library with ample resources and a high level of modernized management.

The Library collects a vast variety of books, covering diverse subjects, with a gathering of numerous treasures and rare items. Currently the Library (including main library and branch libraries) holds under its roof a collection of more than 11 million items of books, among which the 1.5 million items of Chinese ancient materials attract the most attention from the world. Also to the satisfaction of readers is the massive acquisition of digital resources from home and abroad.

PKU Library also hosts many important national organizations as following (1) China Academic Library and Information System (CALIS), (2) the Administrative Center and National Information Center of CASHL (China Academic Social Sciences and Humanities Library), (3) the Secretariat of DRAA (Digital Resource Acquisition Alliance of Chinese Academic Libraries), (4) the Secretariat of Steering Committee for Academic Libraries of China (under the Ministry of Education), (5) the Secretariat of Academic Library Society, China Society for Library Science, (6) Editorial office of Journal of Academic Libraries. The Library thus occupies an important pivotal position for the sharing of China’s higher education literature and resources, making a due contribution to the general development of China’s university libraries.
