University Library "Svetozar Markovic" in Belgrade

The University Library "Svetozar Markovic" from Belgrade is the oldest and the largest university library in the country. Its history dates back to 1838 as it originates from the library of the Lyceum of the Principality of Serbia. The University Library as we know it today was built in 1926 with donations from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

The University Library "Svetozar Markovic" is the central library of the University of Belgrade and it is the parent library for all academic libraries in Serbia. In 1992 the Association of Academic Libraries in Serbia, which now has 157 members, was established at the University Library "Svetozar Markovic". Its main function is to organize, coordinate and supervise the activities of its members.

The University Library "Svetozar Markovic" is primarily intended for students, teachers and researchers, but it is open to all the members of the public. The library currently holds over 1.5 million library items, about 230,000 records in an electronic catalog and it has access to 35,000 international scientific electronic journals, 40,000 electronic books and around twenty databases. It participates both in national and international projects and it strives to keep up with the current trends in the Library and Information Science.
