ABSTRACT Medellín became the capital city of Antioquia when a change in the production paradigm was established: the change of mining to agricultural and livestock production farm, which allowed the emergence of a fledgling industry in a city that, did not have the features expected to be present industrialization process. The exploratory research is classified as historical type, where quantitative aspects involved. It highlighted a growth in services in the real estate subsector with slight decline in the manufacturing industry. A decrease in employment in the industrial sector from the year 2006 against an increase in the services sector is observed, although variations are substantial and significant change, the process of terciarization is not appreciated as such being slow and complex. The City has an excellent range of services and infrastructure. However, it also has a number of difficulties as a limited labor supply by the limited knowledge of many of the agents, trained to industrial activities, generated in many cases, by the educational deal in town While employment growth occurs in the service sector, which generates jobs contribute to some extent to the value added, however, some problems think of "backwardness" that still not been passed in this area. The service sector is the hub and center of all the productive activity of the city region, while the industrialization process moves to ring border, which in our case is reflected in the San Nicolás Valley, to the centrality of Rio Negro and more to the point, the "pantry" of the big city far east region manager of agricultural and livestock production. Medellín se transformó en ciudad capital de Antioquia cuando se estableció un cambio de paradigma productivo: el cambio de explotación minera a la producción agrícola y pecuaria; esto permitió el surgimiento de una industria incipiente en una ciudad que no tenía las características esperadas para que se presentara un proceso de industrialización. La investigación se clasifica como exploratoria de tipo histórica, donde involucra aspectos de tipo cuantitativo. Se ha evidenciado un crecimiento del sector servicios en el subsector actividades inmobiliarias con leve caída en el sector industrial manufacturero. Se observa una disminución del empleo en el sector industrial a partir del año 2006 contra un incremento del sector servicios, aunque las variaciones no son considerables y no se aprecia un cambio significativo, el proceso de terciarización se caracteriza por ser lento y complejo. Para esto, se procedió a evaluar el periodo comprendido entre 2000-2011. La ciudad cuenta con una excelente oferta de servicios e infraestructura. Sin embargo, cuenta también con una serie de dificultades como una oferta laboral limitada por los pocos conocimientos de muchos de los agentes, adiestrados para actividades industriales, generado en muchos casos, por la oferta educativa de la ciudad. Si bien se presenta crecimiento del empleo en el sector servicios, los empleos que genera aportan en alguna medida al valor agregado, sin embargo, algunos problemas hacen pensar en “rezagos” que aún no se han superado en esta materia. El sector servicios es el eje y centro de toda la actividad productiva de la ciudad región, mientras que el proceso de industrialización se desplaza al anillo de frontera, que en nuestro caso se refleja en el Valle de San Nicolás, con la centralidad de Rionegro y más al extremo, la “despensa” de la gran ciudad región el oriente lejano encargado de la producción agrícola y pecuaria.
