Sustainable Development Goals as it Relates to the Environment : A Rare of Hope or a Mere Fantasy?
For quite a long time, there has been the realisation of the environment as an important component of human life as the existence and sustenance of humanity depends on it. Despite this recognition, several human and non-human activities have resulted in putting the environment in a catastrophic state, leaving humanity to grapple with the myriads of challenges that now put life at peril. Taking this background into consideration, this paper examines the role of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in protecting the environment by examining the relationship of the goals and the environment and how much impact the former has on the latter. The paper finds that SDGs serve as a catalyst for achieving environmental sustainability as they are more than a mere fantasy, offering a great hope notwithstanding the fact that they suffer several impediments just like the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which preceded them. However, it is concluded that the goals are an improvement to MDGs and are more realistic. Although achieving them by 2030 may not be possible, however, they offer hope in the long run as the more we strive towards achieving them, the closer we get to their actualisation
