Entrepreneurship : The Missing Link in Zimbabwean Universities Education Business
The study sought to investigate why entrepreneurship is still the missing link within the Zimbabwean University Education Business from the year 2000 up to 2008 where the country as a whole was aiming to attain the millennium goal of, ‘creating employment, personal freedom and increasing self reliance amongst majority citizens of Zimbabwe’. It was noted that the Higher and Tertiary Education System is still churning out more graduates across all unique academic disciplines than the economy can absorb. The study was motivated by the decline in entrepreneurial and socio-economic development and rapid increase in the number of unemployed graduates as the labour market is struggling to accommodate graduates across the country. A case study of Zimbabwean Universities was used. The respondents were university students and lecturers across the three selected universities. Questionnaires and interview guides were used as data collection tools. Purposive sampling was used to select respondents, particularly senior lecturers in various faculties. Students were randomly sampled such that each and every student irregardless of the nature of the faculty has an equal chance of being selected. Statistical methods were used in data analysis; data was presented in form of tables, graphs and pie charts. The study revealed that, the methodologies used in delivering entrepreneurial courses for example lectures, group presentations and discussions were inadequate to cultivate an entrepreneurial spirit among students across all faculties. The study found out that most lecturers who taught entrepreneurship as a course at Higher and Tertiary Level lack real business projects which they manage on their own, thus lacking real life experience and exposure within the business world. The study also noted that most students excluding those from the faculty of business and commerce even failed to define entrepreneurship and still did not yet realize the importance of introducing entrepreneurship as a core course in their degree programmes and thought it was only relevant for students in the school of business and the faculty of management and commerce. Universities were failing to run meaningful business projects which generate income hence failing to convince their own graduates to start business projects on their own and improve their standard of living. The study recommends that state universities should held workshops and seminars with successful and inspirational local entrepreneurs with the intention of motivating students to be job creators not job seekers when they graduate. State universities should form partnerships with both the public and private sector to enhance skills and capabilities of potential students in employment and wealth creation. The study also recommends that the government and universities should fund graduates with fruitful ideas. There was also the need to introduce a science park or technology park whereby industrialists work alongside students and young entrepreneurs to fully develop and realize their ideas before releasing them (incubation) to run successful business projects on a larger, real business environment
