Indigenization of the Tourism Industry : Case of the Food and Beverages Sector in Zimbabwe
The study investigated the potential of indigenization of the food and beverages sector in the tourism industry. The food and beverages managers who are largely indigenous people are best placed to be entrepreneurs in this sector. The underlying assumption was that Food and Beverage Management is a significant step towards indigenization. A survey was conducted on 200 respondents drawn on a systematic sequential sampling technique. Two questionnaires were constructed and a pilot study involving 10 (ten) respondents outside the sample parameter was carried out. A theoretical framework based on indigenization concepts has been proffered to help the readers understand the indigenization process in the food and beverage sector of the tourism industry in Zimbabwe. A combination of the following factors i.e. financial factor, socio political environmental factor, government regulatory factor and also the potential indigenous factor have a bearing on the success or failure of indigenization process. After evaluation of the answers, a revised questionnaire was developed, validated and administered. Results show that the industry is male dominated (75%) and most of the owners interviewed (47%) did not raise to entrepreneurship through a career ladder. A wish to own business (65%) was generally expressed but finance was cited as barrier for most indigenous people. The conclusion arrived at was that entrepreneurship is viable not only for food and beverage managers, but for others
